Below is the prepared text of Chancellor Cynthia Barnhart's welcoming remarks at MIT's doctoral hooding ceremony, held June 4, 2015: Good morning. Please be seated. I’m Cynthia Barnhart, and as chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it is my privilege to welcome you to the annual ceremony for the investiture of doctoral hoods.The event marked the second time MIT’s doctoral hooding ceremony has had a keynote speaker, a new annual tradition at the Institute. The speaker is chosen with input from MIT faculty and doctoral students. Okonjo-Iweala received her MCP from MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning, and a PhD in regional economics and development.MIT Chancellor and Ford Professor of Engineering Cynthia Barnhart SM ’86 PhD ’88, who annually presides over the hooding ceremony, introduced Su while giving welcoming remarks. Barnhart said she was “thrilled” to have Su addressing the graduates, and offered her own congratulations to the newly minted doctoral graduates.
A: The Hooding Ceremony is a special recognition for graduates receiving a final master’s degree or a Ph.D. All candidates are individually recognized at the Hooding Ceremony, whereas at Commencement students cannot be recognized individually. As with Commencement, all faculty and students wear academic regalia at Hooding.Read More

The 2018 ceremony featured Candis Callison SM ’02 PhD ’10, a scholar at the University of British Columbia and an award-winning journalist, as its guest speaker. The tradition of inviting an alumni guest speaker to the Investiture of Doctoral Hoods began in 2015, and engages MIT faculty and doctoral students in the selection process.Read More
The Graduate School held its 2017 Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony on May 13 at the Durham Convention Center. The event was attended by 251 Ph.D. recipients, 205 faculty members, and more than 1,200 guests. Kenneth Gergen (Ph.D.'63 psychology), recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, was honored at the ceremony and addressed the graduating students.Read More
